St Helens Labour has announced its candidates for Blackbrook Ward in the forthcoming all-out local elections in May, with Councillor Anthony Burns and Councillor Paul McQuade seeking re-election alongside new candidate Gareth Cross.

The selection combines established experience with a fresh perspective, as Labour continues its borough-wide campaign to contest every ward in an election where all council seats will be up for election.

Councillors Burns and McQuade have represented residents in Blackbrook and have worked on a range of local priorities, including supporting community organisations and securing investment in the area. They are joined by Gareth Cross, who brings a strong commitment to public service and community engagement.

The announcement follows Labour’s recent borough-wide campaign launch event, which brought together members, councillors, Members of Parliament and regional leaders.

Councillor Anthony Burns said:

“It is a privilege to represent Blackbrook & Haydock, and I am proud of where I live and the work we have undertaken on behalf of residents. Paul and I have thoroughly enjoyed working all year round to support our community, and I am very pleased that Gareth Cross is joining the team.

He brings both enthusiasm and a strong commitment to the area. Together, we will continue to work closely with residents to deliver for Blackbrook & Haydock and to ensure the community benefits from continued investment and improvement.”

As the local Labour team for Blackbrook, Councillors Burns and McQuade highlight a record of delivery and community engagement.

They have supported and awarded grants to a wide range of local organisations, including Blackbrook JRLFC, St Marks Haydock, Ashurst School PTA, Blackbrook Scouts, Yarn Yickers, Haydock in Bloom and Valley Brass Band and many more.

Significant achievements include securing a brand new school at Ashurst Primary and supporting numerous community initiatives across the ward. These include funding for sports equipment, community projects, cultural activities and youth development opportunities.

They have also secured investment in the Sankey Valley area and worked collaboratively with partner agencies to support residents affected by recent flooding. This has contributed to the development of the “Slow the Flow” initiative, aimed at reducing future flood risk.

Further improvements include securing funding for a refurbished outdoor pitch shared by Blackbrook Rugby and St Augustine’s School, as well as investment in the upgrade of Linda’s Park, enhancing local play facilities.

The team has also provided ongoing support to residents on a wide range of issues and maintained a visible and active presence within the community.

With a continued focus on fairness, investment and opportunity, the Labour team states it remains committed to protecting local services, supporting families and strengthening communities.

Councillor Paul McQuade said:

“As a lifelong Yicker, it is an honour to represent Blackbrook & Haydock, and I am proud of what we have achieved. I look forward to continuing to work hard for residents alongside Anthony and Gareth.

We will remain active and visible in the community, listening to residents and ensuring that local concerns are addressed.”

Gareth Cross said:

I am proud to be standing as a candidate in Blackbrook. It is a strong and vibrant community, and I am committed to listening to residents and working hard all year round to make a positive contribution to the area.”

Further candidate announcements are expected as the campaign continues in the lead-up to the May elections.
