St Helens Borough is one of six members of the Liverpool City Region, alongside Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral.

The City Region, like other devolution areas in Greater Manchester, West Midlands, South Yorkshire and more, was set up to draw powers down from Westminster so that more decisions about spending and services could be made closer to the communities they affect. Devolution is not about taking powers away from councils or towns.

St Helens Borough hasn’t lost any independence or influence by becoming a member of the Liverpool City Region – in fact we’ve gained far more influence at a regional and national level than we would ever have on our own.

In the few years the City Region has existed we’ve been successful in securing well over £100m funding for projects in St Helens Borough. You can read more information about these here.
