NHS St Helens CCG and St Helens Borough Council are delighted to announce that St Helens Cares has been shortlisted for the Health and Local Government Partnership Award at the 2020 HSJ Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare.

St Helens Cares has been shortlisted despite the tough competition from over 1000 entries. St Helens Cares has been selected based on their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that they/their project has/have had on patient and staff experiences within the health and/or social care sector.

Labour Councillor Marlene Quinn, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care at St Helens Borough Council, says: “For our residents St Helens Cares has already made a huge impact by combining the expertise and knowledge of our partners to create a system that works with them to provide the right level of support. We’re immensely proud of the results that have been achieved through this innovative model of service that is improving our residents lives and this award shortlisting is another recognition of the outstanding work being done by a dedicated workforce across partners.”

The judging panel is made up of a diverse range of highly influential and respected figures within the healthcare community including: Sir Bruce Keogh, Chair, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s FT, Mark Axcell, Chief Executive, Black Country Healthcare FT and Caroline Beardall, Director of Workforce and OD, NHS England and NHS Improvement – South East.

St Helens Cares is a place-based approach to health and care developed to enable health and local government to work together to tackle deficits and improve outcomes for residents.  St Helens Cares brings key partners together to deliver integrated services aimed at using resources within budget to improve the lives of people who live in the borough – with a key focus on people who suffer from mental health issues, frailty and people with respiratory conditions – and prevention of these high on the agenda.

Professor Sarah O’Brien, who has the dual role of Clinical Accountable Officer for St Helens CCG and Executive Director, People’s Services at St Helens Borough Council, says:

“We are delighted to have been shortlisted for a prestigious HSJ Award which recognises the collaborative efforts and dedication of our staff members to successfully implement the work of St Helens Cares. We are committed to delivering improved outcomes for the people of St Helens, and to be chosen among the other incredible nominees is a wonderful achievement.

“This nomination has been a tremendous boost to staff at all the organisations who make up the St Helens Cares partnership – which goes beyond NHS and local government partnership working – and in fact involves the third and voluntary sector, housing, Police and Fire as well as other public sector partners who all work together for the good of health, wellbeing and outcomes of those who live in St Helens.   I am sure this will bolster our continued efforts to improve our services even further going forward.”

Now in its 40th year, the HSJ Awards is the largest annual benchmarking and recognition programme for healthcare. Through a rigorous, fair and transparent judging process the awards produce a roll call of the best organisations, teams and people in the NHS and the wider health sector.
